Pitt Students Say Show Me the Syllabus

Five students sitting at a desk with laptops in front of them
We know that students want to know what they’re getting into before registering for classes. Conversations among friends, sites like RateMyProfessor, and word of mouth often guide students to sign up for a certain class or a certain instructor - and not always with the best results. The SGB at the University of Pittsburgh wants their fellow students to be better informed, and they believe syllabi are the way to make that happen. To this end, they’ve drafted a proposal that would ensure that all syllabi are available before registration to help students make more informed course choices - and similar proposals are in the works at other schools.

Open, Syllabi!

Open, Syllabi!
Efforts to make syllabi accessible to a broader audience are nothing new. Open Syllabus, a project begun by The American Assembly at Columbia University, brings together over 18 million publicly-available syllabi from 7,389 schools and provides insights into information like assigned readings and course outcomes across their database. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find numerous institutions who use Concourse Syllabus on the list. Concourse makes it easy to share syllabi with current and prospective students as well as the general public with easy website and portal integrations. And we put you in control of what and how much of the syllabus to display with our granular group permission settings. Read more about Open Syllabus at the link below - and contact us to learn more about how we can help make your syllabi public!

We are excited to be joining a pair of regional conferences for the month of October. The Alabama Canvas Users Meeting brings together Canvas users from across the state of Alabama to discuss best practices and new strategies in distance learning. And the NC3ADL conference is a virtual gathering of distance learning professionals from all across North Carolina to do the same! We’ll be sponsoring and presenting at both and would love to talk to you. To learn more about these and other upcoming opportunities to meet Team Concourse, check out our Conference page.
